ARTICLE XVII
Adoption Leave

a. A Teacher who is the parent of a newly adopted or foster child shall be granted, upon his or her request, a leave of absence without pay for a period of up to twelve (12) weeks (see family leave) or the remainder of the school year. The Teacher going on adoption leave after November 1st may be granted a leave for the remainder of the school year plus one (1) additional school year. The Teacher requesting the leave will inform the District of the pending adoption as far in advance as possible. A Teacher who requests an adoption leave may carry over his/her three (3) personal days for one year (maximum of six (6) days total) to use for paid absences related to an actual adoption. Such requests must be made by a Teacher in writing and forwarded to the personnel office prior to July 1st. The days will convert to sick days if unused.
 
b. The beginning date of the leave will coincide with the arrival of the adopted child.
